By 2015 UK had shut down all but one coal power station, which had supplied 50%+ of electricity, and replace them with wind power. All, but one which was mothballed, were demolished. UK average daily power demand is 39GW and wind capacity is 38GW so no problem? Today, it is windy in the UK, but wind can only manage 48% of demand and on many days no more than 5%. So where does the rest come from? Gas and the one remaining nuclear power station. We have simply transferred from coal to gas. Gas must operate continually as back up - this is expensive and no saving in CO2 emissions. During the Winter, the one remaining coal station had to be brought on line to supply electricity - at premium price - to stop the grid collapsing. What the enthusiasts for wind do not understand is it is not just a matter of how much power is being fed into the grid, but the frequency, which must be constant to within +/-1Hz. Any fluctuation for even a few seconds causes safety shut down. Coal and gas power stations with their mechanical (flywheel) batteries provide built in inertia to smooth out frequency fluctuations which occur when load demand varies or power stations leave the grid or join the grid. Wind turbine installations cannot do this. A grid can only function using ‘green’ energy if there is a duplicate fossil fuel system running as back-up. Germany with its 30 000 wind turbines, has resorted to building new coal fired stations and reopening mothballed ones. There is plenty of evidence, but there are none so blind as those who cannot see.
