I know someone who is pivoting to rural commercial solar sales. In his part of the country the subsidies are so high for this sector that the break even period for a full commercial installation has fallen to just 1-2 years. So his pitch to companies is basically “do you want a free power plant from the government?” And I don’t blame him or the people that take the free money, it’s just basic financial incentives/personal interest that drive it. I can’t think of anything else in my lifetime where the government was doing giveaways of hugely expensive high tech stuff to huge numbers of people/organizations. At the same time, I’ve received nit picky letters from the IRS quibbling over tax issues that are a fraction of a fraction of the cost of these programs, where they’re spending more on admin costs than the money they’d get back from me.
But it does not emit methane, which the mining of oil and gas does. Methane becomes formaldehyde, the provable cause of extinctions, and the flooding rains destroying so much. And we will not have to eat synthetic manmade food. All in favor, raise your hand.
I'm working on it! A wind turbine power system that doesn't run on subsidies, that is. Seraph Power LLC intends to bring its patent-pending wind turbine to production in a battery and fuel-powered hybrid system that powers a household 24/7/365 at costs competitive with on-grid attachments. If it can't pay for itself, if it can't compete, it should go the way of the sail-powered automobile.
Meanwhile, we could replace every coal-burning plant in USA with Combined Cycle Gas Turbines for about one-third the price, keep electricity prices low, the economy humming, and lower carbon emissions even more.
Here in Alberta we did that, and now we are 100% dependent on a single fuel, gas, when the going gets tough and all our useless renewables go to zero (often).
This was a huge mistake for us as it would be for you.
I love gas but power generation is a place where I support the slogan “diversity is our strength”.
I never said that we should exclusively use natural gas. The US already has a blend of nuclear, hydro, solar and wind. I am stating that if you want drastic carbon emissions, replacing coal with CCGT is the most cost-effective way to do so.
I don’t know about Alberta specifically, but Canada has huge hydro resources would should be added to your list.
Interesting - I see you used the photo of the Fighting Jays Solar facility destroyed by hail recently - checking on their corporate status with the Texas State Comptroller office their right to do business has been forfeited.
The cannot do business in Texas!
So what does this do for anyone dealing with them in Texas, who wants or needs payment?
Or their insurance status... lots of questions and only missing filings and reports or payments with the comptroller.
These LLC's are such a problem - bet they have collected their IRA ITC, I am sure, and probably their PTC's until the hail halted that!

You’ve only got one fossil fuel subsidy in here for context. What’s the total annual fossil fuel US subsidies? Look fishy to leave that out TBH…
Excellent insights on the reality of electricity that few others cover. Thank you
I doubt that the cost would be that low- if we don’t come to our senses the cost will be in the Trillions
Well written Post...
Also, just in case anyone wants to know..

Thanks Robert, for the illuminating perspective of just how broken the political system is.

Aptly put, SHOW ME INCENTIVES AND I'LL SHOW YOU THE OUTCOME.
Another great article. Keep going Mr. Bryce...
The German numbers would be interesting too…

Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program.

As the US goes broke, they are tilting at windmills. In twenty years, these eco-crucifixes will be nothing but open air rural garbage dumps

Superfund sites! massive superfund sites!
Eye opening information Robert, and remarkably upsetting for every taxpaying adult in this nation. thank your for keeping us informed
Half a billion on unreliable energy that only produces a few hours per day.
Think how many closed-loop geothermal plants could have been built for that, providing heat and electricity 24x7 for 50+ years?
